Highlights from SchoolCounselor.com
eReaders
I've owned a Kindle 2 (http://bit.ly/RZp6y) now for several
months and I love it. As I'm using it and experimenting with it,
I ponder the potential for these types of eReaders to be adopted
in both school counseling and counselor education. I do wonder
if it just a matter of time that readers are adopted as paper
replacements as the advantages seem to already be significant
and will continue to evolve.

register your phone/Mobile device number by following the
directions are
here
(A list of providers can be found
here):
Check your calendar via SMS
To receive a notification with your calendar information,
send a text message containing one of the following commands to
the shortcode '48368' (GVENT):
* 'next': request your next scheduled event
* 'day: request all of your scheduled events for the present day
* 'nday': request your events scheduled for the following day
Please note:
–This feature is available only in the United States at this
time.
– Only event information from your primary calendar will be
retrieved.
– Information is currently only available for events that are
scheduled within 24 hours of the request.
Create an Event via SMS
To create an event on your primary calendar via SMS,
simply send a text message containing your event's details to
the shortcode "GVENT (48368)."
For example, if you send a message with something like "Shopping
with Sarah at Monterey Market 5pm Saturday," Google Calendar can
figure out what you mean and pop the new event into your
calendar.
Please keep in mind that this feature is only available in the
US at this time.

“Dealing with PDF Files in
Outlook
As you might know, when you receive an attachment (e.g.,
Word or Excel) in a Microsoft Outlook email, you can single
click on it and preview the file without having to open in it
(double clicking on the file will open it). However, there is
not available a built in previewer for PDF files. This free file
does the trick. After installing, you will be able to preview
PDF files within Microsoft Outlook. The trick though is that,
Foxit must be your default PDF viewer. If not, it will launch
Acrobat and defeat the whole purpose of the quick preview. I
recommend Foxit over Adobe as a PDF reader anyway.
To download free Foxit PDF reader (click
here).
To download the Foxit PDF viewer:
a. If you are using Windows Vista, download Foxit PDF Preview
Handler (Alternate Link Vista).

b. If you are using Windows XP and have Outlook 2007, install
Foxit PDF Previewer for XP (Alternate Link XP).

Internet Safety 3.0.
Both the Internet and the way young people use technology
are constantly changing, but Internet safety messages change
very slowly if at all. A few years ago, some of us in the Net
safety community started talking about how to adjust our
messaging for the much more interactive "Web 2.0." And we did
so, based on the latest research as it emerged. But even those
messages are starting to get a bit stale….
Now it's time for Internet Safety 3.0.

The Internet as a Diversion
Three-quarters of online economic users--those Americans
who use the internet to keep up with news about the economic
recession or their own personal finances--go online to relax and
take their minds off of the recession, according to an April
2009 survey by the Pew Research Center's Internet & American
Life Project. Listening to music and watching online videos are
among the most common of the activities we evaluated; roughly
half of all online economic users have done each of these
activities to relax. Approximately one-third of online economic
users have played online games or chatted with friends (on a
social networking site, listserv or other online group), while
an additional 22% have taken their minds off of their economic
or financial circumstances by creating or posting content
online. Young Americans in particular go online in great numbers
to relax by watching videos, listening to music, playing games
or chatting with friends.

Photo Recovery Programs
Source: Komando.com
At some point in time, it’s happened to all of us: we’ve
accidentally deleted photos from a memory card or hard drive.
But this doesn’t mean that your precious memories are gone for
good. Most memory card manufacturers offer software to recover
images. For a fee, of course. Additionally, you can purchase
third-party programs to recover images.
