TIPS AND TRICKS
Opening Up New Files from Microsoft 2007
With Office 2007, Microsoft changed the document file format. Older
versions of Word save documents as .doc files and Word 2007 saves
files with a .docx extension. Unfortunately, Word 2007 files are not
compatible with earlier versions, which makes sharing files more
complicated. If you have an earlier version of Word, the easiest
thing to do is to download the Microsoft Compatibility Pack from
Microsoft's Web site. Microsoft suggests that before you download
the Compatibility Pack you should get all the High Priority updates
and patch your Office installation to the latest service packs. Once
you have installed the
Compatibility Pack,
you can open, edit, and save files using the new Office 2007 file
formats in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007. If you are using older
versions of Word, you may want to read the Knowledge Base articles
that explain what you can expect with the converters.

Multimedia Accountability Reports Using PowerPoint and Narration
Lately, I’ve been teaching school counselors how to do their Closing
the Gap Outcome reports in a multimedia format. Picture your
superintendent, principal, parents, and other stake holders
receiving a short, 3 minute PowerPoint file, that opens up and
starts a rich show that explains another way that you make a
positive difference in the lives of children. The recipient hears
your voice and the show progresses automatically with voice and
animation in harmony. I have an instructional handout and sample
presentation available at
http://www.schoolcounselor.com.
You’ll be surprised at how easy it is, check it out now.

WORTHY WEBSITES
AND SOFTWARE
Autistic Children Architect Their Ideas Using 3D Design Software
Project Spectrum was developed by the SketchUp Team at Google to
help people with autism take advantage of their visual and spatial
gifts. The idea for Project Spectrum originated when we began
getting phone calls and emails from users telling us about how much
kids on the autism spectrum were enjoying SketchUp. As the calls
kept coming in, we learned that people with autism tend to be
visually and spatially gifted—that, in fact, they think in pictures.
When people with these gifts get their hands on powerful,
easy-to-use 3D design software like SketchUp, sparks tend to fly.

Get Rid of “Craplets”
Craplets are useless programs and trial versions that come installed
on many new PCs, or that piggyback onto other downloads and install
themselves on your computer. The result: a clogged hard disk, and a
slower system. That's where this free must-have comes in. It looks
for dozens of craplets, finds them, and eliminates them. The
program's list of targets is long, and it includes the craplets most
commonly preinstalled on PCs, such as QuickBooks Trial, Dell Search
Assistant, Wild Tangent Games, a variety of Norton and Symantec
trialware, and Yahoo! Toolbar.

7 Simple Tips That Will Turn You Into a Powerful Leader
You don't have to be in a position of authority to be a leader.
Conversely, just because you have authority doesn't mean that people
will follow you. You must be a leader to get others to follow you.
There are many books on leadership. They can have lots of great
examples and in-depth explanations, but sometimes you just need
something simple to help you focus on the essentials. This article
intends to do just that. These are the habits that will help you and
your team achieve great things if you focus on them.
