Data Boot Camp for School Counselors

and Administrators - CD

Russell A. Sabella, Ph.D.

My newest CD is designed to help you become more proficient in using Microsoft Excel™ to make data an important part of your comprehensive school counseling program. From data-driven decision making, to monitoring progress, to reporting the positive impact you're having on kids -- this CD will demystify how it's done. With the Data Boot Camp for School Counselors and Administrators, what you see and hear on the videos is what you do. At your fingertips, you'll have access to 30 videos and lots of graphics, tips, tricks, and resourceful links. This straightforward step-by-step approach makes learning how to use Microsoft Excel™ (and a bit of PowerPoint™) as easy and convenient as watching television. Data Boot Camp will help school counseling students, practitioners, administrators, and counselor educators to more easily unlock the power of data so you can more effectively support student achievement.

The content on the CD is equivalent to a full-day workshop in the computer lab!

Visit and learn more about the contents of the CD and view a couple of sample videos (Remember, these samples may take a few moments to load because you are online. However, on the CD, this is not an issue because the videos are all located on the CD itself!).

TIPS AND TRICKS

Test your MySpace Safety Knowledge

Kids love the social-networking Web site MySpace.com. But far too often, their profiles disclose too much personal information. See if your child can spot 10 safety problems in the sample MySpace page below. You may have to scroll down to view all of the safety issues. Then, follow the links below the profile to see if your child is correct!

Sharing Large Files

Lots of counselors ask me to send them files that are crazy big (e.g., 20 Mb or more), too big for e-mail to handle. There are other ways to transfer those large PowerPoint, video, or other files, here are a few:

– I use www.Yousendit.com all the time. You simply upload a file up to 100 Mb, include the e-mail address of the person you are sending it to, and they will get an e-mail with a download link. That’s it. You can also send the link to others for multiple end recipients.

– Similar to Yousendit.com, MegaUpload at http://www.megaupload.com/ will handle up to 500 Mb files! Also check out sendspace at http://www.sendspace.com/, Transfer Big Files at http://transferbigfiles.com/ and YouSwap at http://youswap.com/

– Another way to transfer large files is to send them using a google mail or gmail account. Gmail currently allows up to 20 Mb attachments. Caution though, if your recipient isn’t using gmail, his or her e-mail system may reject larger files. So this solution works well when all users are using gmail.

– I use Skype (http://www.skype.com/) for making all types of phone calls. I can also send files to other Skype users without any limits. The transfer is a bit slow although you can “set it and forget it” while it works in the background. If you are a Skype user, ring me up at Russell_Sabella.

– If you want people to pay for the files download, you can do this at Payloadz. I like it because it integrates well with PayPal, Google Checkout, and other merchant account services for collecting fees via credit card. https://www.payloadz.com/sell/

- Xdrive gives you a 5GB personal hard drive on the Internet. You can back up your valuable files - your music, photos and more - automatically; Conveniently access all your files from anywhere; and easily share your files with friends and family. http://www.xdrive.com/ Also, check out http://www.driveway.com/.

Maybe attachments are completely blocked for you. Why is that? When you send pictures or files in e-mail, there are a few basics you should always keep in mind. By understanding the issues and by knowing your options, you'll be able to send and receive pictures and attachments with confidence and ease. To learn more about this course, read the overview in the center of this page or the table of contents in the left column.

Teens and Online Stranger Contact

Fully 32% of online teens have been contacted by someone with no connection to them or any of their friends, and 7% of online teens say they have felt scared or uncomfortable as a result of contact by an online stranger. Several behaviors are associated with high levels of online stranger contact, including social networking profile ownership, posting photos online and using social networking sites to flirt. Although several factors are linked with increased levels of stranger contact in general, gender is the only variable with a consistent association with contact that is scary or uncomfortable--girls are much more likely to report scary or uncomfortable contact than boys.
